“The Diary of a Young Girl, ‘Secret Annex'” The Boston Globe, October 6, 1952

In 1952, The Boston Globe introduced American readers to the voice of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl whose diary recounted her life in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The feature shared excerpts from her writings, where Anne confided her fears, observations, and dreams while living for two years with her family in the hidden “Secret Annex.”

The article included passages addressed to her imaginary friend “Kitty,” where Anne described everyday struggles, like food shortages, arguments, and moments of hope, while the family concealed themselves from the Gestapo. Readers were also shown floor plans of the cramped annex, offering a glimpse into the hidden world where Anne chronicled her adolescence.

More than a decade after her death in a concentration camp, Anne’s words resonated with a new generation, revealing both the intimate humanity of a young girl and the larger tragedy of the Holocaust. Her diary, published as The Diary of a Young Girl, quickly became one of the most important firsthand accounts of life under Nazi persecution.
