The discussion of guns in America is centuries old. An 1882 editorial in Nebraska’s Hebron Journal argued that while citizens may bear arms, the right does not extend to becoming a menace.
“At present gunmakers and pistol sellers sell these weapons to anybody without asking any questions.”
Additionally, the writer urged restrictions on weapon sales, warning that even boys could freely buy revolvers, and cautioned that widespread carrying signaled a breakdown of law and order.
